St. Paul's Cathedral

St. Paul's Cathedral
St. Paul's Cathedral

St. Paul's Cathedral, Sir Christopher Wren's masterpiece, was built after the old Gothic cathedral was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666. It overlooks the centre of London from the top of Ludgate Hill, its floodlit dome visible from a great distance. The magnificent baroque interior contains work by such consummate craftsmen as the woodcarver Grinling Gibbons and the metalworker Jean Tijou.

Among those whose tombs and memorials are here are Lord Nelson and Wren himself. Children will relish the climb to the Whispering Gallery, where the shape of the dome magnifies the sound of their voices. There are glorious views from the Stone Gallery and the Golden Gallery, at the very top.
